Ronald E. Beettam, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Equitable Life of Canada®, has been elected Chairman of the Board
of Directors of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association
Inc. (CLHIA). Mr. Beettam previously served on the Board for two
years and as Chair of the Standing Committee on Standards and
Marketplace Relations.
Mr. Beettam joined Equitable Life® in January 2005 as President
and CEO having worked in the insurance industry for 30 years.
Equitable Life is the largest federally-regulated mutual life
insurance company in Canada.
Mr. Beettam is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario
in 1979 with an Honours BSc., Actuarial Science. He is a Fellow of
the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and the Canadian Institute of
Actuaries (FCIA). He is also member of the Industry Advisory
Committee for Assuris, the not-for-profit organization that
protects Canadian consumers in the event that their life insurance
company should fail. He is also a supporter of the United Way in
Kitchener-Waterloo.
Established in 1894, the CLHIA is a voluntary association whose
member companies account for 99 per cent of Canada's life and
health insurance business. The industry provides a wide range of
financial security products such as life insurance, annuities
(including RRSPs, RRIFs and pensions) and supplementary health
insurance to about 26 million Canadians. It also holds more than
$400 billion of assets in Canada and employs over 120,000
Canadians.
